Tang Soo Do Ethics and Discipline

To ensure proper respect, all students must follow the traditional ethics of Tang Soo Do.

1.      Upon Entering the Training Hall or ‘Do Jang’

Students dressed in training uniform or street clothes shall bow to their instructor as they approach the entrance of the training hall. Students do not have to wait for the instructor to acknowledge the bow if the instructor is busy.

2.      Starting Class

(a)              The instructor will centre himself in the front of the class. Students will line up according to rank and seniority with the most senior student on the far right.

(b)              The most senior student will then observe that everyone is dressed neatly before calling the commands – Attention – Salute the flags or Instructor – Meditation – Bow to Instructor.

Proper respect and discipline shall be maintained at all times and the Tang Soo Do tradition should be followed in a uniform manner.

3.      During Class

(a)              When the Instructor or a more Senior Instructor enters the training hall, all students must stop whatever they are doing. No student should remain seated whether in uniform or in street clothes. The most senior student in the class must call the class to attention and have the class bow.

(b)              If a student must leave the training hall, they must raise their arm, wait to be acknowledged by their Instructor then ask permission from the instructor to leave.

(c)               When a student returns to class or comes to class late, he must bow and stand to attention at the entrance or just inside of the training hall and wait until he is recognised by the Instructor.

4.            There Must be Silence in the Training Hall

(a)             Students seated on the sidelines must remain silent so as not to disturb those practising on the floor.

(b)              Students and spectators are prohibited from chewing gum or smoking.

(c)               While seated on the floor, students should keep proper posture conducive to good health:  legs crossed, the back straight and your hands should be placed on your knees.

(d)              Mobile phones and watch alarms must be silenced during practice.

5.            Salutation

Much importance is placed on the salutation by the traditional bow.  It is an integral part of martial art practice.  Salutation portrays humility and respect to the instructor as well as the senior members and opponents.  The student must not lose prudence, self-control, patience or composition.  Before and after exercises and tests, the student should turn round, adjust his uniform and bow to the instructor or opponent.

6.            Training Uniform, General Hygiene and Safety

Students must exercise care to ensure their uniform or Do Balk is kept clean and pressed at all times. This is the student’s responsibility not the parent’s (although obviously the younger students will require some assistance with this).  It is important to give a good impression of our art and a neat appearance is important in this respect.

(a)              All members must have their general hygiene at the highest standard before entering the training hall.

(b)              Fingernails and toenails must be clipped short and kept short so as to prevent injury during sparring.

(c)               Long hair should be kept tidy and away from the face to allow complete vision during practice.

(d)              Jewellery e.g. rings, earrings must be removed or covered during training, and necklaces or ankle chains must be removed.

Warming-up Exercises

These must be practiced prior to training to prepare the body and mind.  An unprepared body could be strained under the rigorous exercises and basic practice of Tang Soo Do.  After training, stretching exercises also help to relax oneself to return to a calm and normal state.

8.            General Observation

During practice, students must observe decorum and orderliness.  The training hall must always be kept clean and well ventilated whenever possible.

9.            Dismissing Class

Students must line up as in the starting of the class to bow to the instructor.  The most senior student must turn round to ensure that everyone is neatly dressed before calling commands as in the starting class.
