Health & Safety
To enable a training class to run smoothly and safely,
an Instructors mind should not be pre-occupied with unexpected aspects of
safety while teaching the class, therefore the Instructor and students should
take the precautions listed below before the class begins.
1.
The Training Hall. (It is presumed the building is of sound construction)
The hall should have:
a)
Enough floor space for the amount
of students they are teaching at any one time.
b)
Adequate lighting with no shadowed
areas.
c)
An area where the instructions can
be clearly heard without interruption.
d)
A floor which is suitable to walk
on in bare feet
e)
A floor that is preferably a
sprung safety floor, if not then a wooden floor without splinters will do (do
not conduct a class on a bare unscreened concrete floor or grassy area without
the students wearing adequate foot protection).
f)
A floor area free from obstacles
such as chairs, tables, kit bags.
g)
A floor area with no wet patches
from either perspiration or even a leaky roof.
h)
No broken glass or mirrors where
the sharp edges are not covered.
i)
Correct room temperature for the
time of year.
j)
Adequate flow of ventilation.
k)
No sharp object hanging from the
walls.
l)
Enough ceiling height to let
students jump when practising.
m)
Adequate emergency exits in case
of Fire etc.

The Training Equipment
Equipment used for training
should:
a)
Be of good quality (a tried and tested brand).
b)
Be in clean and in good usable condition (kick or punch pads should have
no tears or holes).
c)
Be held correctly by a competent person (especially hanging kick / punch
bags).
d)
Not be used by children without supervision.
3.
The Instructor
All instructors must:
a)
Be qualified in the practice they are teaching.
b)
Have at least taken a Part 1 First Aid course
c)
Keep a first aid box at hand.
d)
Keep a record of the names of the students at the beginning or the
lesson.
e)
Ensure students with a medical condition have their necessary medication
to hand.
f)
Have a telephone at the ready in case of emergency; this could be a
mobile phone.
g)
When teaching children, have read the Guidelines for Safeguarding
Children’s Welfare
h)
When teaching children, be aware of who would be picking them up after
the class has finished.
i)
Be aware of any friction between students and attempt to resolve the
situation before they train.
j)
Never leave the class unattended while the students are training.
k)
Be able to maintain discipline within their class.
4.
The Student
All students should:
a)
Have a reasonable temperament ready for a training session.
b)
Be dressed in suitable attire for the training lesson that is to be
given.
c)
Uniforms should be tied correctly and be a loose fitting to enable the
student to stretch their arms and legs without damage to their body.
d)
Uniform belts must be tied correctly and be of the correct length.
e)
Have trimmed their finger and toenails to an acceptable length (ladies
and young girls who grow their nails long for fashionable reasons must make the
instructor aware of this).
f)
Have long hair tied back so as not to restrict vision.
g)
Not be wearing any kind of jewellery; rings, necklace, wristwatch,
bracelet, ankle chains, earrings. If certain items cannot be removed, with the
permission of the instructor, the items may be taped over or covered in some
way.
h)
If they wear spectacles, wear sport or safety spectacles.
i)
Ensure the instructor is aware of any long-term health condition they may
suffer (asthma, heart, back, knee or hip problems etc.).
j)
Ensure they have any of their necessary medication to hand.
k)
Notify the Instructor of any disabilities they may have incurred since
they last saw them (whether they believe this may effect their ability to
train or not). The Instructor will decide.
l)
Warm up properly before the training lesson starts.
m)
Ensure that their tetanus cover (where applicable) is always up to date.
As matter of common decency to
others around, all students and instructors must have a very high standard of personal hygiene
before they start their training session.
All the above is expected before training
starts.
